Recliners are one of the most common pieces of furniture we haul out of Southern California homes, and also one of the most awkward. They are heavy, oddly shaped, and they rarely fit back through the doorway they came in through. Power recliners and lift chairs add another layer: motors, wiring, transformers and sometimes battery packs that cannot legally go in the trash in California. Here’s how to get rid of one in Los Angeles, Orange County and the Inland Empire.
Disposal is different for each type of chair:
Lift chairs are usually the heaviest of the three because of the steel lift frame and motor. Most weigh well over 100 pounds, so plan for two people.
Since 2006, California has banned all household batteries from the trash, including ordinary alkaline AA and 9-volt cells. They are treated as universal waste and have to go to a household hazardous waste (HHW) facility or a battery drop-off. The backup pack on many lift chairs holds exactly those batteries. Before the chair leaves the house:
Newer cordless models may use lithium packs, which can start fires in garbage trucks. Our lithium battery disposal guide covers the rules.
Sometimes. Clean, working recliners with intact upholstery are welcome at many thrift stores and at Habitat for Humanity ReStores across Southern California. Donation gets much harder if the chair has:
Working lift chairs are harder to place than you might expect. Some charities won’t take powered furniture at all, and others decline lift chairs as medical equipment. Call first, or offer it to family, church groups or a local “buy nothing” group. If you are also clearing out a hospital bed, walker or shower chair, our guide to hospital bed and medical equipment removal lists places that take them. For help deciding between donating and hauling in general, see furniture donation vs. junk removal.
Most cities in Los Angeles, Orange County and the Inland Empire offer some form of bulky-item collection through their trash hauler. A manual recliner is usually a straightforward fit. Keep these limits in mind:
We compare the two options in more detail in bulky item pickup vs. junk removal.
Most recliners were delivered with the back detached, and many backs still lift off. Look behind the chair for metal brackets or locking levers on each side. Release them and the backrest slides straight up and off. The chair gets shorter and lighter and fits through a standard door.
We most often remove recliners and lift chairs when a parent moves to assisted living or a smaller home, or during an estate cleanout after a loss. The chair is rarely the only item, so our guides on downsizing tips for seniors, junk removal for seniors and estate cleanout services can help you plan the whole job.
Junk removal is priced by how much space your items take up in the truck, not by a flat per-chair fee. One recliner is a small load. A lift chair plus a sofa, mattress and a few boxes is priced as a larger share of the truck. Labor is included. We pull batteries for recycling, donate usable chairs, and send metal frames and motors to scrap recycling where possible.
