Permanent change of station orders come with a report date, a stack of paperwork, and a house full of stuff that all has to be dealt with before the packers arrive. For military families stationed in Southern California, from Los Angeles Air Force Base in El Segundo to March Air Reserve Base in Riverside County and Joint Forces Training Base Los Alamitos in Orange County, the smartest move you can make is getting rid of what you don’t want before it gets weighed. Here’s how to handle a PCS move cleanout the right way.
Your household goods shipment is capped by a weight allowance set by the rank on your orders and your dependency status. According to Military OneSource, any cost to move weight above that allowance is charged to you after delivery. That bill can land weeks after you’ve already settled into your new duty station.
The Joint Travel Regulations (JTR) are the official authority on entitlements, and your local transportation office will walk you through your exact numbers during counseling. Before that appointment, run your belongings through the USTRANSCOM weight estimator tool linked from Military OneSource. If the estimate lands close to your limit, the old couch, the broken treadmill, and the garage full of stuff you haven’t touched since your last PCS are the easiest pounds to cut.
Some things families forget are part of the total:
Professional gear is tracked separately. Military OneSource lists up to 2,000 pounds for the service member and up to 500 pounds for a spouse, so declare it properly instead of cutting it.
Some items can’t go on the truck at all, and they need a plan before pack-out day:
If you live in privatized military housing, your move-out inspection has its own rules. Tierra Vista Communities at Los Angeles AFB, for example, asks residents to submit a 30-day notice to vacate, review a move-out guide and standard charge sheet, and complete a final inspection. Its departing-resident page also says no bulk items may be left behind. Anything you abandon at the curb or in the garage can show up as a charge.
Every housing community sets its own policy. Before booking any outside service, call your community office to confirm how contractor access works on your installation, whether a bulk trash pickup can be scheduled for broken items, and how early you need to clear the unit before inspection.
Walk every room, the garage, and the storage shed. Sort into four piles: ship, sell, donate, and haul. Run the weight estimator on the “ship” pile. If you’re doing a personally procured move (PPM), every pound you cut is one you don’t have to load, drive, and unload yourself.
List furniture and big-ticket items on your base’s buy-sell pages or local marketplaces. Schedule donation pickups early, because charities book up and many turn down stained or damaged pieces. Our post on furniture donation vs. junk removal explains what donation centers typically accept.
This is when a professional haul-away pays for itself. Clear everything in the “haul” pile in one trip: broken furniture, old mattresses, worn-out grills, garage junk, and yard debris. Packers work faster in an uncluttered house, and nothing unwanted gets boxed and weighed by accident.
There are always leftovers: items the movers wouldn’t take, things that didn’t sell, and cleaning debris. Book a final pickup before your housing inspection or your landlord walk-through so you can hand over the keys with an empty unit.
Plenty of service members stationed in Southern California rent in Long Beach, Torrance, Riverside, Moreno Valley, Seal Beach, or Cypress. The federal Servicemembers Civil Relief Act lets service members with PCS orders terminate a residential lease with proper written notice. Your landlord can still deduct cleaning and removal costs from your deposit if you leave belongings behind. For more prep tips, see our declutter-before-a-move checklist.
We serve Los Angeles, Orange County, and the Inland Empire, which puts us close to the region’s bases and the off-base neighborhoods where military families live. Our crews do the lifting and loading, and we donate and recycle usable items whenever possible. Pricing is based on how much space your items take up in the truck, so you’ll know the price before we start loading.
